Helpful Tip for rodents and other cage pets:
When choosing a bedding material for cage pets, opt for aspen shavings over pine or cedar. The oils in cedar and pine shavings can irritate skin and lungs and, in the case of cedar, can cause changes in liver enzymes. Heat treated pine shavings possess lower levels of essential oils but are still not considered completely safe. Hedgehogs especially should not be kept on cedar or pine shavings because the irritation from pine oils can cause them to lose their quills.
