Paul G. Gunnoe, DVM (Owner)

Doctor Gunnoe was born in Charleston, West Virginia. He attended West Virginia University/Tech. and West Virginia University during his three undergraduate years, receiving a Bachelor of Science Degree. He earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from Tuskegee University in Alabama in 1981, graduating with honors. During his years at Tuskegee, Dr. Gunnoe developed his interest in surgery (soft tissue and orthopedic).

In 1984 he founded Animal Care Veterinary Hospital. Starting out as a solo practitioner with 2 employees, the hospital has since grown into a five doctor, 25 employee practice. As the practice continued to grow, we moved into our new hospital in 1993 and shortened the name to Animal Care Associates. Affiliation with AAHA ( American Animal Hospital Association) was also established in 1993. Animal Care Associates is one of only a few hospitals in the whole state of WV to have this affiliation.Animal Care has always treated a wide variety of animals including dogs, cats, birds and exotics. We continue this commitment today.

Dr. Gunnoe is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and American Animal Hospital Association. He served on the Kanawha/Charleston Humane Association Board of Directors for twenty years. During this time he was instrumental in the establishment of the Humane Society's Early Spay/Neuter program and mandatory spay/neuter of animals before adoption. During his tenure on the Humane Society Board, Dr. Gunnoe was recognized by The Charleston Gazette along with local building contractor and Board member Rodger Monk in developing and overseeing the construction of the new animal shelter that stands today. Dr. Gunnoe also served as Board president for three years and guided the animal shelter through two major destructive floods. It was a busy 20 years!

Dr. Gunnoe is now enjoying retirement with his wife Robin and three children in South Charleston. His menagerie consists of a Yellow Lab, 2 French Bulldogs, a shelter cat, Flemish Giant rabbits, chickens, ducks, swans and Koi fish.

Jeffery K. Patton, DVM (Owner)

Doctor Patton was born in Shady Spring, West Virginia. He did his undergraduate work at Marshall University and earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree from The Ohio State University in 1994.

It was at Ohio State that Dr. Patton decided to work with Exotic animals. As a student he studied at both the Columbus Zoo and The Ohio State University Exotic Outpatient Clinic in order to further his knowledge in exotic medicine. In addition, he spent a month at the Honolulu Zoo in Hawaii studying dozens of exotic animals including: chimpanzees, black and white rhinoceros, cheetahs, giant tortoises, and flamingos to name a few. Dr Patton now works with birds, reptiles, hamsters and numerous other animals in addition to dogs and cats.

He is an active member of the Association of Avian Veterinarians, American Veterinary Medical Association, West Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and American Animal Hospital Association.

He and his wife Monica work together at Animal Care Associates, Inc. Monica is a Registered Veterinary Technician and Head Technician. She is the founder and former President of the West Virginia Association of Veterinary Technicians and was recently appointed to the West Virginia Board of Veterinary Medicine. They are both clinical instructors at Carver Career Center Veterinary Technician Program.  They reside in Charleston and share their home with; five birds, two dogs,  one turtle, one tortoise and multiple fish.

Mark D. Webster, DVM

Dr. Webster grew up in Teays Valley, West Virginia, and has been interested in Veterinary Medicine since he was five. He and his parents trained dogs and exhibited them in Obedience for 15 years. Scruffy, the first dog he trained, was an intelligent and headstrong terrier that became the eighth Cairn registered by the American Kennel Club to earn a Utility Degree. Volunteering at the local Animal Shelter gave him first hand experience with the overcrowding, disease and funding problems that plague the shelter system.

Dr. Webster's formal education included a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from West Virginia University and his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from The University of Georgia in 1991. He is an active member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, West Virginia Veterinary Medical Association and the American Animal Hospital Association.

His wife Toni and his three children also love animals. They have a menagerie which includes dogs, cats, and iguana, a chinchilla, and a ferret.

  Laura Slack, DVM

Dr Slack graduated from Charleston Catholic High School in 2008 and went on to attend West Virginia University. After receiving her degree in Animal and Nutritional Sciences at WVU, she went on to study at Mississippi State University, where she graduated with a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.

During her studies at Mississippi State, Dr. Slack gave much of her time working with a local mobile spay/neuter program, providing much-needed assistance too many area shelters throughout Mississippi.

Another memorable experience for Dr. Slack was the opportunity to travel to South Africa, where she was able to work with giraffes, cape buffalo, and many other native species. She has one furr child, a sweet kitty named Beatrice, whose favorite activities include sleeping on Mom's lap under a blanket, or spying on the household by hiding behind open doors while peering thru the crack.

Jennifer R. Tonkin, DVM

Dr. Tonkin is originally from Little Birch WV, she graduated from WVU with a Bachelor of Science in Animal and Nutritional Science and recently received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine. I have always gotten the best care for my animals at Animal Care Associates but I've not been in need of your services for many years. I was delighted to find it is still the most professional and caring group ever.

I have visited a few others thru the years so I know you are the best! I had to be fit into the schedule but Gracie was still given all the time needed to get her taken care of. Just keep up the good work!  ~ Melody
